pilot project:
Children’s Museum bonaire

In May 2025, the Children’s Museum Bonaire launched its very first public activity at the Public Library of Bonaire: a creative workshop for children aged 5–6, guided by young local artist Qhyzhanne “Kiki” Martines. This marked the beginning of a five-part pilot program, with each Saturday focusing on a different age group. With brushes, paper and imagination, the children explored their creative power, supported by a wooden tipi specially built for the workshops by artist Greg Hooi. Partners such as Kooyman (materials), FKPD (inclusion of children with disabilities), and Children’s Museum Curaçao (train-the-trainer) played a key role in making this pilot possible. The strong participation and excitement showed Bonaire’s clear need for a space where children can learn, discover, and create through play. This first pilot was a great success and an important step toward a permanent Children’s Museum on the island.

Objective of the Workshop:

Children aged 5–7, 8–10, and 10–13 will collaborate to create two unique book presentation totems for the Bonaire Library. These totems serve as decorative and functional artworks, promoting less frequently borrowed books and highlighting new titles. The goal is to encourage reading while offering a visually appealing, lasting contribution to the library.

Process and materials

Participants use materials such as fabric, cardboard, papier-mâché, rope, wood, and collage. Each group contributes to different parts of the totems, which are assembled into complete presentations afterward. Children are given 50 minutes to channel their creativity into the designs.

interactive and sustainable

The totems are designed to be both decorative and interactive, featuring rotating panels or compartments for book displays. Frames are pre-prepared, allowing children to focus on decoration and assembly.

duration

Each workshop lasts 100 minutes, with 50 minutes dedicated to creating. The remaining time is used for project introduction, brainstorming, and finishing.
